Film of the Month

This week I am recommending "Kick Ass." This delightful superhero movie works exceedingly well as an action/comedy movie as well as somehow being able to work very well as a stand alone superhero movie. Add Nicholas Cage to the mix in a supporting role that he is not terrible in and you have a truly fun superhero movie that is well worth watching. Watch the first one before you see the sequel which has just recently hit theaters.

TV Show of the Month

This week I am recommending "Bates Motel." It might seem shocking to most people that I would enjoy a remake/ remaining of the untouchable "Psycho"however this is an excellent remaining of the iconic movie. The relationship between Norman (played to perfection by Freddie Highmore) and his mother Norma (played brilliantly by Vera Farmiga) is so disturbing in it's complexity that it is worth watching dolly for that dynamic that these two great actors bring to the screen. Additionally, there are some really interesting side characters and a few sup rising twits that make this show an excellent remake. Check it out!

Comedy of the Month

This week I am recommending "Spaceballs." Mel Brooks is a comedic genus but what really makes some of his films stand out is that despite the fact that they are comedies and arguably the most brilliant satire films you will ever see they are made incredibly well. That is one of the rare gifts Mel Brooks has when he makes a film. It is at one time a parody and a worthy addition to the genre of film that he is in fact making fun of. "Spaceballs" makes fun of "Star Wars" and yet I would argue that most "Star Wars" fans love "Spaceballs." Check it out.

Winter Is Coming

Winter Is Coming
"I know how this game is played."

Completing the triumvirate of television shows for me!

Villain of the Month

Hannibal Lecter has been played by several different actors over the years, most famously by Anthony Hopkins, who made the character a true icon. So those are some tough shoes to fill but the very engaging Mads Milkkelsen is doing a different yet rather brilliant take on the character in the surprisingly excellent crime show "Hannibal." At one time charmingly friendly and absolutely terrifying at the same time this is not a man that you want to find you to be uninteresting!

Strange Movie of the Month

"Meet the Feebles" is Peter Jackson's take on a family variety show done in the style of the beloved Muppets. Peter Jackson has a very dark sense of humor. There is explicit sexuality in this film, prostitution, mass murder, and rampant drug use. It is a film so bizarre that I am still unsure as to why any major studio gave him a chance to direct Hollywood films, though good thing they did. This is still one of the strangest films that you will ever watch.
