My Week With Marilyn

Looking at a specific time period in a persons life is a great way to focus a screenplay and create a highly entertaining Hollywood film. So many stories have been told about Marilyn Monroe and yet this film seems fresh, fun, and as such a hint of sadness to it. The film follows a young British man named Colin who is trying to break into the movie business. Thanks to his family connections he is able to get a job as a third assistant director on Laurence Olivier's new film which also stars Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn Monroe takes a special shine to Colin and the two spend a week together. Kenneth Branagh is one of the most underrated actors of the last thirty years and he is great as Sir Laurence Olivier. Eddie Redmayne is also excellent in his role as Colin the naive boy who falls in love with Marilyn Monroe only to have his heart broken. Of course it is MIchelle Williams who steals the show as Marilyn Monroe. Although Williams does not look exactly the same as the real Marilyn Monroe she is able to capture her star persona and mix it with an excellent portrayal of letting us see how severely damaged of a person Marilyn Monroe was. . As such it is Williams who anchors the story and is able to leave the audience once again awe of what Marilyn Monroe was really like. Emma Watson also takes a small but pivotal role in the film in which she proves that her role to stardom is already underway. It is a very tight and engaging period piece that should have gotten more recognition that it got. Check out My Week With Marilyn.

  1. I've been wanting to watch this movie for awhile now but haven't had the time really to get around to it. I always end up watching something else. Your review has reminded me that I must go check it out because I love Marilyn Monroe just something about how damaged she was is intriguing to me. I also love the show SMASH on NBC which focused a lot on her the first season. Even though I haven't seen the movie I like that Michelle Williams was cast as Marilyn because it is said Marilyn had this innocence about her before the business drove her to a broken sort of person. Michelle Williams definitely reminds me of innocence.

  2. I brought this film up a couple of weeks ago in a previous comment, and I just want to say again that I love this movie. Such a great film overall. Michelle Williams WAS Marilyn Monroe, and really made you believe so when viewing it. Of course you're not going to find someone who looks exactly like Marilyn and can act the way Michelle Williams does, but she captured her persona quite well. I agree that it should have gotten more recognition than it did, but Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh were nominated for a few different awards, with Michelle winning at the Golden Globes

  3. So I watched the movie this weekend and I absolutely fell in love with Marilyn Monroe all over again and I now really like Michelle Williams. She really made me believe that she was Marilyn and I was so mesmerized by her performance as I imagine people were mesmerized by Marilyn when they watched her on the screen. I couldn't help but fall completely head over heels for the movie. I think that this movie definitely deserved more recognition because I don't really remember hearing much about it.

  4. I saw this movie last year. Like many others, I am fascinated with Marilyn Monroe. I found this film to be very engaging and I also was interested to see the relationship she had with Colin. It almost makes you wonder how many others played such a significant role in Marilyn's life. I truly enjoyed this film and I though Michelle Williams played an impeccable role. Highly recommended.
